We took a Princess tour on this port (as you will notice from our
tacky sticker and oh boy, we even got headsets this time!). The tour
didn't really involve Naples at all and I am so thankful for that! When
we were driving the shuttle bus through Naples to the port it was
seriously like driving through South Side Chicago. Luckily we were
whisked away to a hydrofoil boat that took us to the island of Capri.
Talk about WOW...it is a magnificent fancy pants resort island that we
were blessed to visit. It's very popular for vacations and ultra wealthy
jet setters. A typical condo rents for 20k a month if that gives you any
idea. After Capri we took another hydrofoil to the also beautiful island
of Sorrento where we had lunch and tried to go shopping but it ended up
we arrived during their siesta. I didn't realize people actually
participated in this nonsense but they do...the whole town was literally
shut down so people could nap. Crazy. Finally we took a bus to the
ancient city of Pompeii. This city has an amazing story and was amazing
to see as well. It was destroyed during a catastrophic eruption of the
volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The volcano buried the city under many
feet of ash and it was lost for 1,600 years before its accidental
rediscovery. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily
detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman
Empire. The excavated town offers a snapshot of Roman life in the first
century, frozen at the moment it was buried in AD 79. The Forum, the
baths, many houses remain surprisingly well preserved. Thick layers of
ash having covered the town, it was abandoned and eventually the name
and location were forgotten. Then Pompeii was rediscovered in 1748.
